Clean Sweep For Ryde Beach At Annual Volunteer Event

An annual event has kept the sands of Ryde beach clean heading into the busy summer season with some interesting finds along the way.

Seven bin bags full of rubbish included a long length of rope, a vehicle tyre, barbecue tongs, a wooden fence post and litany of plastic bottles among debris collected from Ryde beach by more than 30 Wightlink staff and partners.

The beach clean is an annual event arranged by Wightlink as part of its ongoing commitment to being an environmentally conscious organisation.

Event leader Louise Lea, from Wightlink’s marketing team, said:

“It was great to see so many colleagues spending a sunny Saturday sprucing up the seafront.

“To be honest, it was pretty ship shape before we started and we had to look long and hard to find debris to clear away.

"Although that meant our task was harder, it also suggests that people are taking more care with their rubbish which is fantastic.”

Next year the ferry company is hoping to involve its partner primary schools — located closest to its three terminals on the Isle of Wight — in the clean-up.
