Concrete Barn Proposed For Outskirts Of Calbourne

A concrete barn storing hundreds of hay bales and modern farming equipment could be built on the edge of the Isle of Wight National Landscape.

Simon Long submitted a planning application for a green cladded barn and a new private road, described as a ‘critical investment’ for a farm near Newport, to the Isle of Wight Council.

The nearly ten metre high structure and access road would be built on land off Calbourne Road and Betty Haunt Lane.

A Design and Access Statement written by Mr Long’s agent, Nova Architectural, said:

“The barn is to be utilised to store hay that is cultivated on the site.

"This year, the site produced a yield of 300 four foot bales of hay, but due to no storage available on site, the bales had to be stored off site at another farmer’s barn.

“Next year, the client is looking to produce twice that amount, and requires an on-site storage area to store these.

“To further this, the client requires storage for their modern farming equipment, which is currently stored outside.

“By providing a secure and dry environment, the barn will protect the valuable machinery, ensuring its longevity and reducing any potential maintenance costs.

“The barn is, therefore, a critical investment for the operation of the site.”

Nova Architectural added the design of the barn was conceived to be compatible with the neighbouring landscape.

Green cladding along with 70 metres of additional planted hedgerows would allow the development to ‘harmonize’ with the rural environment.

Trees and hedgerows already on the site would not be adversely affected by the proposal which also includes the creation of a ‘species rich’ grassland.

A delegated council decision on the application will be made on January 7 and a public consultation will finish on December 13.
