COVID: Mandatory Mask Wearing And Social Distancing To Be Scrapped, PM Says

Mandatory mask wearing and social distancing will be scrapped from July 19, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

Speaking at a Downing Street press briefing, Mr Johnson outlined his five step plan to move away from legal restrictions.

From July 19, legal limits on those meeting indoors and outdoors will be removed.

Businesses, including nightclubs, will also be able to reopen and visitors allowed to care homes.

Islanders can also wave goodbye to the one metre plus rule - and the legal requirement to wear face coverings.

Boris Johnson said:

"I want to stress from the outset that this pandemic is far from over. As we predicted in the roadmap, we are seeing cases rise. There could be 50,000 cases per day. We are seeing rising hospital admissions and we must reconcile ourselves with more deaths.

"When we paused step four two weeks ago we had two reasons. We wanted to get more jabs in people's arms and we have. Our expectatrion remains that by July 19 every adult would have had the chance to have had their first dose.

"These vaccines are indeed successful, with the majority of people admitted to hospital unvaccinated.

"As we come to the fourth step we have to balance the risk, the risk of the disease and the risks of continuing with legally enforced restrictions which take their toll on people's lives. We must be honest with ourselves that if we can't open society in the next few weeks then when will we be able to return?"

Tomorrow, the Education Secretary will outline plans for pupils and bubbles.
