Cowes Enterprise College Students Go Full Steam Ahead With Hydrogen Grand Prix

Talented student teams from Cowes Enterprise College have competed in the British Final of the H2GP Hydrogen-Powered RC Car Endurance Race.

The two sets of students, Team Eco Futures and Team Eco Change travelled over 400 miles to Scotland to take part in the world’s largest hydrogen car competition.

As part of the competition, the young innovators were challenged to design, engineer, build and race their own hydrogen-powered cars for four-hours as part of an intensive endurance rally.

Both teams from Cowes put forward an impressive performance, with Team Eco Change achieving the second-fastest lap across the competition and leading the race for 90 minutes before having to retire with a motor malfunction.

Team Eco Futures also impressed onlookers with their car’s endurance, completing an incredible 221 laps before encountering power management issues that challenged their performance in the four-hour race.

The event marked a significant milestone for these dedicated students, who have been diligently preparing for the challenging competition since 2023.

Throughout the programme, the budding eco-leaders had the unique opportunity to develop the creativity, ingenuity and real-world problem-solving skills needed to tackle tomorrow's energy challenges.

Rachel Kitley, Principal at Cowes Enterprise College, said:

“All of us at Cowes are so proud of how hard our students have worked across this exciting project – seeing their dedication, passion, and knowledge grow has been truly inspiring, and it is great to see their work come to fruition in this exciting challenge.

“The entire project has been a great learning and personal development opportunity for students, providing invaluable lessons in career exploration, self-discovery, teamwork, and celebrating achievements.

"Creating excellent educational opportunities for all students is core to our mission at Cowes, and we look forward to seeing many more incredible successes across our learners.”
