The crew of Cowes RNLI lifeboat ran a 'May Day relay mile’ through the centre of the town and back on Monday (May 1).
The object was to raise the profile of the life-saving charity, including promoting the RNLI’s May Day Mile campaign, while at the same time collecting funds.
The race began at the lifeboat station and continued with short stop-overs at various businesses en-route, all owned by crew members or their family.
The first leg had crew members donning additional lifeboat gear at different businesses (including dry-suits at Gastronomy, lifejackets at the Fountain Inn, and helmets at Sails cafe).
At the Duke of York, the halfway point, there was a change of crew who ran the return leg to the station in full kit.
The lifeboat’s stretcher was collected at Sails, then at the Fountain Hotel it was used to carry the RNLI’s ‘Dead Fred’ training dummy further along the High Street.
The relay ended at the lifeboat station, where crew members were given a chance to catch their breath before demonstrating their casualty finding, towing, and casualty care skills.
At Trinity Landing the evacuation by stretcher simulated the extraction of a ‘casualty’ from the lifeboat.
At various points supporters were on hand with collection buckets, resulting in around £200 being raised on the day.
