Curtain Up On Weddings As Shanklin Theatre Unveils New Marriage Licence

Islanders can now tie the knot at Shanklin Theatre after the venue was granted a marriage licence.

Couples planning to wed will be able to walk up the aisle in the footsteps of the great and good from the world of entertainment.

Shanklin Theatre has hosted appearances by Norman Wisdom, Arthur Lowe, Jimmy Tarbuck, Craig Revel Horwood, Jason Manford, Sarah Millican, Lucy Worsley, Jane McDonald, Eddie Izzard and many more.

Services will be conducted by an Isle of Wight registrar, who will be on hand to make sure the bridge or groom doesn't forget their lines.

From its professional stage area, complete with state of the art lighting and a glittery curtain, to smaller rooms oozing Isle of Wight history, the theatre promises a room to suit every occasion.

Roger Coleman, from Shanklin Theatre Limited said:

"We have a terrific choice of shows here, but weddings will be something quite different.

"Our new wedding licence, which allows us to host civil ceremonies, means a very exciting future for the theatre."

Wedding themes on offer

Planning a 1940s theme? Choose the restored Map Room, once used by Civil Defence as a control room, strengthened by steel girders to protect against WW2 bombs and crammed with historic finds.

Upstairs, the former Mayor's Parlour dates to 1913 and the rehearsal room offers a cosy and artistic space, with the flexibility to use it as you wish.

Behind the stage area are show-stopping dressing rooms, with lights bright enough to show off a wedding dress from every angle.

The experience is topped off with an arrival worthy of a red carpet - including a sweep up the front steps, through the doors and into the theatre's imposing three-storey classical facade.

The first wedding is already booked in. For details on how you can book, email [email protected].
