Discontent With Island Health And Social Care Services On The Rise Again — Report

Difficulties accessing GP appointments, further problems with hospital car park ticket machines and dental services costs are key issues facing Isle of Wight health services.

Healthwatch Isle of Wight’s January 13 to February 12 Intelligence Report found rising discontent among health and social care service users, with 177 negative pieces of feedback gathered (52 per cent of the total responses).

Nine were mixed or neutral (three per cent) and 156 were positive (45 per cent).

The body’s findings contrast with its previous report (December 13 to January 12) which showed mostly satisfaction among residents sharing their experiences.

GP and dentistry services were the two most common feedback topics, with more than 60 and over 40 negative responses received respectively.

There were also complaints about the car park machines at St Mary’s Hospital.

A&E and social care services mostly received praise, with 18 and 11 positive pieces of feedback.

One resident told Healthwatch:

“Surgery does not enable patients to book face to face appointments with a GP or nurse practitioner through their online services.

“Neither can you book an appointment for a GP to phone you, GP home visit, nurse home visit or have any other kind of communication with medical staff.

“Sometimes I wonder how patients like myself are ever going to get well.”

Another user said they had been quoted several thousand pounds for essential work which they could not afford.

As a result, they will have to wait until their teeth are bad enough to be removed.

NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight have been approached for comment.
