Eastern Yar Flood Alert Issued By Environment Agency

A flood alert for the Eastern Yar has been issued by the Environment Agency.

It says water levels in the area are high and rising, with 36mm of rain recorded at Knighton in the past 12 hours.

From 10am today (Wednesday), water levels will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank.

Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge.

A statement issued by the Environment Agency said:

"We do not expect access issues to Horringford or impacts at Sandown and property flooding is not expected.

"Further rain is expected this morning and water levels will rise throughout this time, being generally much higher than normal.

"Rain is expected to clear the area this afternoon."

At Alverstone, the river won’t peak until at least 1pm, by which time levels will be very high, right to the top of the river bank, near the main road bridge.

Drier weather is expected later this afternoon and into tomorrow, which will give water levels a chance to recover.

The Environment Agency added:

"We continue to monitor the forecast and respond to any reported blockages.

"Please ensure pumps used to protect gardens and property can operate."

An update is expected at around 4pm today.
