Flood Alert Issued For Isle Of Wight's Eastern Yar As 20mm Of Rainfall Recorded

A flood alert has been put in place for Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.

Water levels in the Eastern Yar remain high: In the last 12 hours, nearly 20mm of rainfall has fallen.

Levels at Alverstone are rising, and will continue to rise until this afternoon (Monday).

From 10:30am today, water will be ponded on low lying land throughout the river valley.

Road and footpath flooding is expected.

At Langbridge and Alverstone Road Bridge, the river will be close to the top of the river bank.

Levels at Sandown are rising - flooding of Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road may occur from this morning.

Ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain while river levels are high.

The remainder of today should be fairly dry, but tomorrow up to 18mm of rainfall is forecast.

Flooding will continue to affect low lying land in the coming days.

A statement issued by the Environment Agency said:

"We are operating Bembridge sluice so that water is able to flow out to sea between high tides.

"We continue to monitor the forecast. Avoid walking or driving through flood water."
