Fundraiser Launched After Neck Injury Leaves Isle Of Wight Rugby Player In Paralysis

Funds are being raised for an Isle of Wight sportsman who broke his neck during a rugby match at an event in Ryde at the weekend.

Luke Orton, 26, was playing beach rugby for Ryde Rhino's at the South Island Sevens event on Appley beach on Saturday (July 22).

Unfortunately during the first match Luke went in for a tackle and suffered a freak accident, breaking the C5 vertebrae in his neck, leaving him unable to feel his legs or hands.

Luke is currently at Southampton hospital waiting for the swelling to go down before they can operation.

Michael Cooper, who sponsors local rugby and created the Just Giving page for Luke, said:

"We are looking to raise some money to help cover travel costs, time of work and anything else the family may need during this terrible time.

"The page will be updated as and when there is more information on Luke's recovery and any money raised but not required to help will then be donated to a rugby injury charity or one to support others in similar situations.

"We all know he is a fighter and won't quit, so will do everything he can to be back to normal once able."

Those interested in donation to the cause — which has already smashed its original target of £2,000, reaching £6,475 — can do so via this link.

Any donations left over will be used to support other players injured or a similar charity.
