LIVE: General Election 2024 Count Underway On The Isle of Wight

The General Election polls have now officially closed - with counting due to begin for both the Isle of Wight East and Isle of Wight West constituencies tonight (Thursday).

Counting will be taking place at Medina Leisure Centre through the night, with the process being marginally different due to the introduction of a second parliamentary seat covering the Isle of Wight.

What to expect tonight

It's not yet known exactly when results will be declared for either of the Island's seats - though we estimate that results could be revealed at some point after 3am.

Vote counters will first validate the ballot boxes and the votes they contain before going on to work out exactly how many votes each candidate received.

We'll be providing updates through the night, with our next update due when the first ballot box arrives at the count at Medina.

How does the count work?

Each count table collects several ballot boxes with the votes inside mixed before being counted. This is to ensure it is not possible to identify voting patterns for any given electoral area.

A ballot paper won't be counted if it does not contain an official mark, contains votes for more than one candidate, contains anything that could identify the voter, is unmarked, or does not indicate the voter's intention with certainty.

00:39 - The turnout figures for the Isle of Wight West Constituency have now been revealed.

34,368 votes were cast with a turnout of 62.03%.

00:32 - Vote verification for the Isle of Wight West Constituency has now completed.

00:22 As the verification of ballots continues for the Isle of Wight East constituency count, it appears that the process is now beginning to wrap up for the Isle of Wight West constituency count.

Whilst not over yet, once verification is complete, the count will begin. We expect results to be revealed between 3am and 4am this morning (Friday).

22:32 - The first ballot box has officially been opened and verification of the votes has now begun. This process marks the first step in determining who has been selected to represent each of the two constituencies on the Island.

22:08An exit poll has suggested that Labour could be in for a landslide majority. Read more here...
