Heavy Rain And Thunderstorms Warning For Isle Of Wight

A warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms has been issued for the Isle of Wight.

It's in place between 6pm until 2am tomorrow morning (Tuesday).

The Isle of Wight Met Service is telling Islanders to expect up to 25mm of rain in some places.

There is also a risk of "some fairly large hail and perhaps even a tornado or waterspout".

Forecaster Jamie Russell said:

"A new area of heavy downpours and embedded thunderstorms will develop across the English Channel and France this evening and move their way into southern England and the Isle of Wight.

"Once again torrential downpours are likely in places with up to 25mm of rain falling locally.

"The heaviest downpours could see some strong wind gusts of 40-50mph in places, along with the risk of some fairly large hail and perhaps even a tornado or waterspout.

"Once again it must be pointed out that the worst conditions will be extremely localised, meaning that not everywhere will see the downpours, in fact it is entirely possible that they could miss the island altogether, however the risk for some severe weather is certainly present, and if you are caught under one of the heavier showers/storms, it could well be in the severe category."
