Interview With Cowes Bound Britain's Got Talent Winner Axel Blake

Britain's Got Talent winner Axel Blake is one of the star names at this year's inaugural Cowes Fringe.

The event takes place this weekend, with Axel headlining Saturday's frivolities at Trinity Theatre from 7.45pm.

He took a little time out of his hectic schedule to chat to Isle of Wight Radio's Dom Kureen.

Hi Axel, will this be your first time on the Isle of Wight?

Yes it will, my first time ever, and I’m hoping to explore if I get the chance.

How did you first get into comedy?

I went to a show back in 2009 and was asked to host it — I felt confident with being on stage.

It didn’t feel like hosting was my thing, but I felt drawn to stand-up.

I did a comedy school course and began my journey.

What kind of things did you do before becoming a comedian and did it impact on your material?

I was a bus driver, a mechanic, a delivery driver, plumber...

I never had an office job, and those past roles (are reflected) in my stand-up.

How did Britain’s Got Talent come about?

A family member put my name forward without me knowing.

At first I was like ‘nah, I don’t want to do that’, but after a while I thought ‘why not, what’s the worst that can happen?’

What kind of impact has it had on your life?

It’s had a huge impact, it’s changed everything.

How are you finding touring?

It’s quite tiring but very rewarding.

It’s opened my eyes to how huge the UK is and I absolutely love meeting fans from all walks of life.

Do you find you prefer the smaller, intimate stages or the larger ones?

I like the bigger ones, I know how to work the room with those larger venues.

Axel Blake will be live at Trinity Theatre in Cowes this Saturday (May 27).

Tickets can be purchased on the Cowes Fringe website.
