A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:
"A youth carrying a can of beer who appeared intoxicated got on a double decker in Avenue Road and demanded to go to Newport.
"Due to his aggressive behaviour the 55-year-old man driving the bus refused and the youth tried to attack the driver who then had to remove the youth from the bus.
"Another double decker bus pulled up and the driver of that, a 28-year-old woman, went to his assistance.
"They were both attacked by the youth and received minor injuries. They have been left shocked by the incident."
The youth is described as aged around 16, tall and slim with short fair hair. He was wearing a dark hoodie and trousers.
