Investigation Underway After Ryde Fire Leaves Property Severely Damage

A fire which was came to light last night (Sunday) has left a residential property in Ryde severely damaged.

Fire crews from Newport, Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde were called to a building adjacent to Monkton Street at around 7.10pm.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service arrived a short time later, with residents of nearby properties and those within the The Solent Inn pub evacuated.

It is not yet known whether anybody was rescued from the building during the incident.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have placed a cordon at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service said:

"We received a number of calls reporting a fire at a property on Monkton Street in Ryde at 19:10 yesterday evening.

"Crews from Ryde, Sandown, Newport, Shanklin and Cowes were called out, and were supported with the aerial ladder and water carrier vehicles.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets and hose reels to extinguish the fire which caused the roof of the property to collapse.

"The scene was dampened down before crews returned to station, leaving police to guard the scene ahead of a joint investigation today."

UPDATE11.30am:

It has been confirmed that two Frontline Ambulances and the Duty Operational Commander were mobilised to join Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, and Hampshire Constabulary at a House Fire in Monkton Street Ryde yesterday evening.
