Island Learning Centre "Locked Down" After Suspected BB Gun Brought Onsite

The Island Learning Centre had to be locked down after a young person brought a suspected BB gun into the building.

The Isle of Wight Council says no pupils or staff were hurt at the school, based on Newport's Albany Road.

A council spokesperson said:

"A young person was found to have brought what is thought to be a BB gun to the Island Learning Centre in Newport today.

"The school successfully activated its lockdown policy, the young person left the school and was stopped by police shortly afterwards."

Earlier this afternoon (Thursday) a police officer was assaulted and a 16-year-old arrested following an incident in Newport.

As Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, officers were called to Albany Road. A BB gun was seized.

The Isle of Wight Council says the Island Learning Centre is due to reopen tomorrow as normal.
