Islanders Criticise Removal Of Totland Ticket Machine

Islanders have criticised plans to remove a ticket machine in Totland and not replace it.

Repeated vandalism means the parking machine at Broadway will be removed tomorrow (Friday), according to the Isle of Wight Council.

The local authority has no plans to replace it and says Islanders should pay for parking via the Pay by Phone app instead.

On the Isle of Wight Council's Facebook post Islanders have criticised the move with one saying 'Totland has next to nothing in the way of mobile phone signal'.

Islanders have also branded it as 'discrimination' against the elderly who may not have a mobile phone.

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson told Isle of Wight Radio:

'Unfortunately, because of the ongoing vandalism suffered at this car park, there will no longer be an option to pay for parking with cash. There have been at least five incidents of serious vandalism at this machine over the last five years. 

'We appreciate that this will mean inconvenience for some car park users, but this should apply to only a small minority of those who currently use this car park. Our records show that 80% of Broadway car park users stay for up to an hour, which is free of charge.

'The existing ticket machine is being removed on 16 October and new signage being erected the same day; the new entrance sign will explain that only cashless payments are accepted at the car park.'
