Islanders Urged To Donate Unwanted Bicycles To Africa Via Newport Drop-Off This Weekend

Islanders are being invited to donate their unwanted bicycles to Africa via Newport today (Saturday).

Charity "Re-Cycle: Bikes to Africa" will have a drop-off point located at St Thomas' Square between 9.30am and 3.30pm to collect unwanted adult-sized bikes.

Over the years, Islanders have donated more than a thousand bikes, each making a difference to someone’s life. Re-cycle has bicycle projects in Gambia, Ghana, Zambia and South Africa.

On average one bike is used by six people in an African household.

Sue Bailey, local co-ordinator for the charity, said:

“Wightlink has given us free ferry crossings so we can transport the bikes to the mainland and take them to the charity’s headquarters in Colchester.

"Within a few weeks, these donated bikes will be on their way to helping a young person access education, a health worker reach a clinic or a food grower deliver food to a market.

“Last August, we received more 50 bikes during our previous one day drop off.”

Every component of bikes received is reused, repurposed or recycled.

More information on the charity is available online.
