Isle Of Wight Army Cadets: From Physical Challenges To Dedicated Dexterity

100 army cadets on the Isle of Wight will be taking on a more delicate challenge compared to the physically gruelling ones they are used to - in a bid to 'give back' to the local NHS.

Exclusive

The Gallipoli Company Isle of Wight Cadet Force will take on a crochet challenge during the lockdown. They’ll make 360 squares which will form a blanket - with a picture of the Isle of Wight on it.

It will then be auctioned off on the Island once restrictions are lifted.

The cadets are looking for £2 donations for each square and all the money will go directly to the Local NHS Trust Charitable Fund.

Speaking about the chosen charity, Staff Sergeant Sam Whitewood, Cadet Force Adult Volunteer told Isle of Wight Radio:

“We really recognise that the NHS has done so much throughout this pandemic and we wanted to give back to them in the best way that we could really.”

Like many of us, the cadets have had to move their activities online, but prior to the coronavirus crisis, they would parade once or twice across the Island.

They now do their ‘virtual’ parades online.

He added:

“What we had to do quite quickly was change the way we do things so back in March last year we launched a virtual training page on Facebook and we invited all the cadets to be part of that and post various challenges and different tasks to do throughout the week.”
