Bus passengers on the Isle of Wight can now be notified via their phones if issues - including roadworks and diversions - are likely to affect their journeys.
From Monday 13 January Southern Vectis will provide push notifications, to ensure customers are aware of anything likely to cause them delays.
“We know how frustrating it can be when people have planned their journeys, only to find the bus is delayed or that it takes them longer to reach their destinations because of external factors beyond our control,” said Southern Vectis general manager, Richard Tyldsley.
“With this in mind, we have updated our app with improved travel alerts for our customers. Push notifications about delays or roadworks along our routes will appear on their phones if they have previously marked a particular journey, bus stop or timetable as a favourite.
“For planned roadworks and diversions, a notification will be sent a couple of days before the roadworks begin. For anything that arises as a result of an emergency, the notification will come at the time.
“This latest enhancement adds to a number of improvements we have made over recent years, for those using our bus services across the island.
“In addition to the new buses we welcomed to our fleet in 2023, we have worked with Isle of Wight Council to secure funding from the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme, which will be used to bring 22 electric vehicles here in early 2026.
“These measures are all designed to make bus travel a more attractive prospect and encourage people to leave their cars at home - which will help ease congestion and improve air quality on the Isle of Wight.”
Customers wishing to receive push notifications on their phones should download the Southern Vectis app. All they need do is turn it on and accept notifications in the menu bar.
