Isle Of Wight Businesses Urged To Get Behind New, Free 'Community Street'

Small or medium Isle of Wight businesses are being encouraged to join a new, free website called 'Community Street' - which is the brainchild of volunteers at Care in the Garden.

The aim of the online service is to become a platform for local companies so that they can showcase their skills and products - on one website.

Some businesses within the street will be small or medium firms, some will have a fundraising mission and others will be charities.

John Goodenough Managing Director of Wootton’s Care in the Garden told Isle of Wight Radio:

“For so long I have seen a decline in the high street and my heart goes out to small businesses, people that are struggling to start, maintain the footfall. I have seen a gradual decline in the high street for a long time - maybe it is time to play the big boys game locally.

“It is an initiative that may help to generate sales and to do this all we need to do is get people on the website so they can shop at home and maybe eventually look at this as an alternative to Amazon - shop local and support the high street in your front room.”

"There’s funding out there for projects like this but I need to get the numbers up before we get that. In today’s world, it would be great if we could bring this to light for people in their front rooms, on their PC’s - bring the high street to their living rooms.”

John concluded:

“Anybody out there with a business who would like to shop on the community street, let’s take the next couple of weeks to get together and help develop it.

“I want to thank everybody and all our customers, all the staff at Care In The Garden who work so hard during these uncertain times. And two people who without them we would not be here - Mary and Helen - they know who they are.”

John wants some ‘constructive criticism’ for other businesses about the idea.

Several prominent Island companies have already signed up and you can do that here - at no cost.
