Isle Of Wight Knitters Make Hundreds Of Teddies For Ukrainian Refugees

Earlier this year, St Saviours Church in Shanklin launched an appeal, asking local knitters to make teddy bears for the children of Ukraine.

The appeal was a great success, and a total of 788 bears, along with handmade baby blankets and baby hats, were sent to Ukrainian children seeking refuge from the war.

Elaine Gardner, one of the organisers behind the appeal, said:

"Thank you to all the knitters on the Island who have worked so hard and made each bear with love. We even had a bear made by a 10 year old girl.

"We are still collecting and  teddies can be taken into any Hose Rhodes Dixon office on the Island."

A poem written by Sandra Hoskins accompanied the teddy bears on their long journey.

Hello we are an army of teddies
Knitted and sent from the Isle of Wight
For all you beautiful children
Suffering a terrible plight
Cuddle me when you sleep at night
We'll give you comfort and love
We can help you with your suffering and pain
You beautiful children of Ukraine
