An 81-year-old man from the Isle of Wight, has completed a 33-day sail around Britain, raising over £20,000 for Parkinson’s UK and Cure Parkinson’s.
Covering over 2,100 miles this summer, David Temple's challenging route included navigating round the most northerly point of the British Isles, a rock called Muckle Flugga.
David's main motivation for taking on this epic fundraising journey was his wife, Hazel, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 10 years ago.
He said:
“Every day my wife relentlessly and gallantly struggles through her condition. She is not alone, there are 145,000 in the UK living with Parkinson’s and every hour two more are diagnosed, the numbers are rising.
“Parkinson’s UK is funding research that can give hope for the future. They need better treatments now. Not in 10 years. Not in 20 years.”
David and his crew have raised over an incredible £20,000 for Parkinson’s UK and Cure Parkinson’s.
He said:
“I remain humbled by everyone’s generosity and appreciation of this epic voyage - I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has made a donation.”
David, who has been sailing all his life, says that this challenge was his hardest yet, despite sailing the Atlantic multiple times before. At sea for 33 days, David and his crew covered some tricky stretches of coast and overnight sailing.
David said:
“We visited some remote locations where we saw four seasons of weather in one day. I had an amazing crew by my side. André Usborne, a good friend and sailor, stayed with me for the whole journey, and we were joined at various stages to get through the tricky bits of the journey by Kit Noble, who is living with Parkinson’s, John Smith, Steve Burton, and my grandson Sam.”
