Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as part of a visit to the country from a cross-party group of MPs.

Understanding how UK Government is helping the war efforts and what else can be done, were among the reasons for the visit.

Mr Seely said the trip provided an opportunity for all parties to see for themselves the conditions in the country.

Taking to Twitter, he said:

"President Zelensky met us as breakthrough happened.

"Despite the darkened & sandbagged corridors through which we were escorted to meet him, optimism from the president & advisors was clear.

"Zelensky spoke with a direct emotional intensity and energy is his hallmark."

The Island's MP said the group will write to ministers "to see what can be done by UK and others, in: military, economic, legal, reconstruction, refugee support."

The delegation crossed into the country as news of the death of Her Majesty the Queen came to light.

Mr Seely said the group decided to continue.

"Her Majesty grew up in a nation fighting for its survival in WWII. We were travelling to a nation fighting for its survival today. The parallel was not lost on us."

Among those who accompanied the MP were the SNP's Stewart McDonald, Labour's Fleur Anderson and Gordon Brown's former Chancellor, Liam Byrne.
