Isle Of Wight Referee Taking On Epic Leukaemia Fundraising Trek In Aid Of Legendary Mentor

An Isle of Wight born football referee with 240 professional league matches under his belt is at the forefront of a fundraiser in aid of the man who helped train him.

James Linington, from Newport, is one of several Championship referees showing their support for their coach Gary Willard — currently undergoing treatment for blood cancer.

Wanting to stand in solidarity with Gary, the group will embark on the ‘3 Peaks Challenge’ this summer to raise money for Leukemia Care.

The challenge will see them climb almost 10,000ft — and trek 26 miles in total — scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon to raise money.

A spokesperson for Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) said:

"Gary is a hugely-popular figure within the group and the best wishes of all at PGMOL are with the former FIFA, Premier League and EFL referee as he continues to battle the illness."

The gruelling challenge will begin in the early hours of Wednesday June 7 in Scotland and finish the following day in Wales, with the group having eclipsed the three highest peaks in the United Kingdom.
