A tip on the Isle of Wight had to be evacuated earlier today (Monday) after a replica stick grenade was discovered.
Posting on Facebook, Isle of Wight Police said staff at the tip did not realise the item was a fake, prompting a call-out for bomb disposal teams.
A police spokesperson said:
”Staff advised that they had found a possible grenade and evacuated the site. An officer attended and obtained a photograph for EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal).
“It looks like a genuine German stick grenade from World War 2. EOD have attended and have advised it is a replica, until the experts look at it and pick it up we didn’t know if it is real.
“This has caused several hours of disruption today and officers have only just left the site now it is deemed safe. Please do not throw things like this in the bin.”
