The end of life care team at the Isle of Wight's St Mary's Hospital have missed out on a top honour at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins health awards.
But it was good news for the paediatric ICU team at Southampton's Children Hospital, who won in the 'Best Team' category.
They helped to evacuate 21 Ukrainian children from the Polish border to the UK earlier this year for cancer treatment.
Despite missing out, being nominated for the award was an achievement in itself for the Island's Wellow Unit. The team fought off over 100 nominations to make it to the final three.
At the time of the nod, Juliet Pearce, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:
"This is a fantastic achievement for the team on Wellow Unit.
"Since opening in February 2020 the team have made a huge difference to people who are reaching the end of their lives. I am delighted that the team have been recognised for their commitment and hard work.”
Since opening, the team have cared for over 1,300 patients and their families.
The awards — presented by Davina McCall — aired on Channel 4 last night (Sunday).
