Nettlestone Primary School pupils are celebrating after winning a Platinum Jubilee funded art and design challenge set by Isle of Wight Steam Railway and Osborne House.
Monday (June 27) saw Year 6 children from the school create a train carriage ‘fit for a member of the Royal family’.
Winning team; Samuel, Charlie and Lizzy, designed and created a carriage for Prince Louis, with a futuristic layout, inspired by Japanese bullet trains.
Included in their model was a lounge, dining area and even a sink. It also featured a garden where the Prince’s favourite vegetable was growing.
The children and accompanying adults were picked up from school in style by Southern Vectis’s vintage 1950s bus, ‘Old Girl’, and taken to Havenstreet Station ready for their train journey.
Activities included photographs with the artist who helped them make their design a reality — Creaturama's Anthony James — who is based at Arreton Barns.
Once the sun appeared, there was a short walk down to the beach for ice creams and the children subsequently received a ‘Goody Bag’ as a special treat.
Despite poor weather in the morning, children hailed it ‘the best trip ever’, enjoying both journeys on an open-top vintage bus and steam train.
Sarah, IW Steam Railway, said:
“The judges felt Year 6 pupils from Nettlestone Primary had worked very hard to consider the brief and provided supporting information about the design.
"We loved the futuristic concept, and the amount of detail in both the design and the make. The children clearly worked hard to complete the model.
"It was very difficult to pick an overall winner, but we were very impressed with the amount of effort that was afforded to the challenge.”
Dover Park Primary took second place, while Broadlea Primary were awarded third.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway was awarded £8,540 from the Arts Council’s Let’s Create Jubilee Fund by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF).
