Knighton Records Highest July Rainfall Since Records Began

A flood alert is once again in force for the Eastern Yar after Knighton recorded the highest rainfall for July since records began.

Islanders are warned of high water levels at Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road.

Flooding is already causing delays heading in and out of Sandown, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.

The Environment Agency says 162mm of rain fell at Knighton - the highest total for July since 1952, when records began.

A spokesperson for Floodline said flooding is possible for Eastern Yar and the tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge:

"Today, flood impacts to land, cycle tracks and access paths will continue along the Yar Valley as water remains ponded and unable to drain to the river.

"Over the next five days, slow moving and heavy showers are forecast. For the next 6 hours at least, it should remain dry, allowing the river more time to lower. The river will be very sensitive to any additional rain, so please remain prepared for further potential impacts this week. We continue to monitor the forecast. Please avoid walking or driving through flood water."
