LIVE As Isle Of Wight Council Elects New Leader

Follow live updates as the new leader of the Isle of Wight Council leader is chosen.

A new chair and vice chair is also being picked.

Update 5pm

Cllr Geoff Brodie has been nominated as chairman of the Isle of Wight Council by cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox. 

While, Cllr Gary Peace has put forward cllr Ray Redrup.

Update 5.10pm

Cllr Brodie has been elected the new chair of the Isle of Wight Council. 

He recorded 20 votes to cllr Redrup's 18.

On accepting the role of chairman, cllr Brodie said:

"I'm quite surprised if I'm honest. I will try to be as fair as I can be in the next 12 months.

"I would like to thank Geoff Cameron. I would also like to thank former vice-chairman Shirley Smart. She is a very good friend of mine and I would like to express my thanks to her."

Cllr Ian Ward is now congratulating cllr Brodie and has thanked the two outgoing cllrs.

New Green Party cllr Claire Critchison has been nominated as vice-chairman of the council by cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox.

Cllr Steve Hastings has put forward cllr Redrup.

Cllr Critchison has been chosen as the new vice-chair of the council.

New chair cllr Brodie is asking cllrs to bear with him. He says he suffers with slight epilepsy and may lose his train of thought now and again.

Cllr Brodie says he does not intend to give former council leader Dave Stewart a platfom at this meeting.

We now move on to the big one... the new council leader. 

Cllr Julie-Jones Evans has put forward independent cllr Lora Peacey Wilcox.

She says she believes she would be the right choice.

Cllr Clare Mosdell has nominated Conservative cllr Steve Hastings.

Cllr Mosdell praised his openness and decisiveness, and says roles at the council should not be handed out like sweets.

Cllr Love says he would like to support cllr Peacey-Wilcox, who has "brought unity" and this demonstrates "a great future":

"I think you are the best qualified councillor to take this council forward."

In favour of cllr Hastings, cllr Brading said:

"I have worked with cllr Hastings for many years. He is very experienced..."

Cllr Ian Stephens says Cllr Peacey-Wilcox has proven herself as a former chairman and vice-chairman of the council.

"I think what we have got to look at is not just covid-19 but what is good for the Island", he said.

Lib Dem cllr Andrew Garratt says he is "very content" in choosing cllr Peacey-Wilcox. He insists he has not be "bought off". 

She also has the backing of cllr Paul Fuller.

For the Vectis Party, cllr Daryll Pitcher said abstaining is not an option. It's like trying to be neutral when tackling a fire he says.

Independent councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox has been elected the new leader of the Isle of Wight Council.

Cllr Hastings, who lost out in the vote for leader, said it was down to numbers in the end.

Following a break, councillors have now been appointed to committees of the council.

Cllr Steve Hastings has been nominated chair of the corporate scrutiny committee. This was seconded by cllr Quirk.

Meanwhile, we're told Cllr Jonathan Bacon is the new cabinet member for Environment, Heritage and Waste Management.

A motion to restore reverse proportionality in the Corporate Scrutiny Committee and the three Policy and Scrutiny Committees has been approved.

It means the Conservatives will hold the majority in those committees.
