Mermaid Atlantic Team Reaches Voyage Halfway Point

The Mermaid Atlantic team has reached a major milestone on its epic encounter with the waves, having now reached the halfway point in the middle of the Atlantic.

Rather than rowing away from La Gomera, they are closer to their destination in Antigua.

A change of mindset will hopefully allow them to enjoy the second half of their mission, having had a few blips to date.

They celebrated with a Mermaid Gin & Tonic Ready-To-Drink can in front of a glowing sunset.

Occasionally cuddling up for additional warmth, they have remained virtually argument free despite their continued close proximity, with smiles and laughter exchanged as frequently as sea air is breathed.

Here are some of the highlights of the first half of their journey:

  • Starting their journey with their row heading south, rough conditions lead to a broken dagger board.
  • An emergency flare was deployed on day 3 after the team had a near miss with a tanker in the early hours.
  • Battling rough seas, cool weather and an unsteady boat (made worse by a broken dagger board).
  • Going solo: Their autohelm became out of use, which meant one man was taken out of rowing to hand steer, leaving one to sleep, one to row and one to steer.
  • A few wounds such as oar rash and hand blisters.
  • Strong southerly winds force them to stop and deploy their para anchor for a few days.
  • A faulty second battery
  • Seasickness, making eating incredibly difficult.
  • A resident bird keeps them company along with a sucker fish on the hull.
  • Flying fish storm the boat at night, leaving a rather smelly deck!
  • Minke whale spotting, and dolphins on the horizon
  • Shift patterns in check and no arguments so far!
  • Beards are coming along nicely
  • Over 1500nm now completed.
