A motorcyclist has died following a serious crash near Newport.
Emergency services were called Whiterails Road, between Wootton and Newport, at 6.40pm last night (Thursday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent appliances from Newport and Ryde to the crash, which involved a motorcyclist and a car.
Police and the ambulance service were also called, along with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
The motorcyclist was transported to St Mary’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, despite the best efforts of emergency services.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said:
"We were called at 6.45pm to a report of a collision between a car and a motorbike.
"The motorcyclist was transported to St Mary’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, despite the best efforts of emergency services.
"Next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
"We are appealing for information from anyone who may have been travelling in the area at the time of the incident. Did you witness the collision, or do you have dashcam footage that could assist our investigation?
"A road closure was put in place but the carriageway has now re-opened.
