Much-Loved Isle Of Wight Bird Rehab Announces Closure

A much-loved bird rehabilitation facility on the Isle of Wight is to shut permanently, its founder has announced.

Kay Ounsworth, who helms Isle of Wight Wild Bird Rehabilitation — more commonly known as Mr 'Wally' AWOL and Friends — is shutting up shop due to ill-health.

It comes after Isle of Wight Radio revealed in June the facility was on the verge of closing, if much-needed funding couldn't be secured.

Kay has dedicated years of her life caring for and rehabilitating orphaned, sick or injured birds.

Although she is stopping that side of her work, she says she will continue to use her knowledge to "educate".

"It is with a heavy and very sad heart that I need to inform you that I will be closing permanently", Kay said.

"I would urge anyone with standing orders to bank to please cancel them.

"I will be contacting the bank tomorrow (Monday) to see if payments can be stopped from 'my' end in case anyone doesn't get this message.

"I still have over 200 birds here waiting to be healed, raised and released and I will maintain my commitment to those who are resident for the rest of their natural lives. Approximately 34 birds.

"My health has been failing, and although I am awaiting many tests and procedures, even if nothing major untoward is found, with many smaller health issues accumulating, continuing will be putting birds at risk of accidental harm, which I am not prepared to do.

"I will hopefully head more toward the education sector.

"Keeping up on all latest news and rehab laws and new developments. I May visit schools, do a little field work, help any vets/nurses or other animal sanctuaries who have asked previously for teaching support and mentor those who may be capable of filling in the rehabilitation gaps."

Kay thanked Island Vet Care, Pet Doctors, Medina Vets and Island Vets, among others, for their support.

She said money in the account will be used to continue the care for those here. Further donations won't be accepted.

She said the Facebook page will remain, but the name will be changed.

"I'm here folks. I'm not disappearing, just about in another capacity that hopefully won't lead me to an early grave", she said.

"Last but not least, THANK YOU. All of you for your trust, love and support over the years."
