New Beginning For Wessex Cancer Support Centre In Newport

Wessex Cancer Support has welcomed more clients to its Newport Centre, and brought in a new manager to run it.

The centre was refurbished in 2019, with the support of the local community. Since then, client numbers have continued to grow.  Over the past few weeks there have been some positive developments as the island staff ready to help the community as effectively as possible.

Liz Tapsell has been announced as the new centre manager, responsible for overseeing the delivery of services including counselling, therapies, and both group and drop-in sessions. Liz, who has been a previous client and volunteer in the centre, was promoted from her role of centre co-ordinator.

Liz said:

“I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead Wessex Cancer Support’s services on the Island. I’ll be working hard to further the charity’s connections in the local community to ensure everyone who would benefit from our support, knows where to find it.

"I've already been working closely with Laura, the Isle of Wight’s regional fundraising manager, to give the centre a spruce up, including a lick of paint, swap around of rooms, and a good clear out.”

Laura and Liz are excited to welcome the island community into the fresh new space.

Wessex Cancer Support provides free and local emotional support to anyone affected by cancer in Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.  Clients may have cancer themselves, be adjusting to life after cancer, supporting someone with cancer, or be bereaved.  It is a charity which relies on donations to provide this support.

It runs services in the heart of the community, including popular Sing for Life choirs and transport on its Daisy Buses to help Isle of Wight and Channel Islands patients get to their hospital appointments on the mainland.
