Trading Standards has issued a number of new scam warnings for the Isle of Wight.
Share scam
An Island resident was contacted and asked for by his full name before being offered the purchase of several shares.
NEVER get into a financial arrangement with anyone who has contacted you out of the blue — it will be a SCAM.
If you want financial advice go to a bank or trusted financial advisor, do your homework and find someone reputable.
'01983' code scam calls
The have been several reports of scam calls coming from 01983 numbers.
Scammers buy landline numbers and they could come from anywhere, unfortunately we tend to trust a local dialling code so might easily be persuaded that the call is genuine.
These reports were claiming that they were from the bank or a credit card company and that payments had been taken out.
If you receive a call purporting to be from the bank and you are concerned hang up, wait a while for the scammer to leave the line and then call 159 – you can then select your bank from those listed and they will confirm if the call you have received is genuine.
Home insulation
A reminder not to engage with anyone calling up about home insulation.
These callers will be scammers and if you allow them to “survey” your property they will undoubtedly find problems and could cause more with any work they carry out.
Business email hacking
Trading Standards has received a report of a business email being hacked and bank account details being changed on invoices so that all payments due to the company would be diverted to the scammers.
We have seen this previously with solicitors and house purchasers have lost thousands paying their deposit, unknowingly, to scammers.
If your customers are paying you money ask them to call you to confirm banking detail.
