Newport Drug Driver Banned From The Roads

A Newport man has been banned from driving after testing positive for cannabis use while behind the wheel.

On the evening of July 25, officers spoke with 35-year-old Luciano Dent whose vehicle had stopped along Forest Road in Newport.

Dent, of South Street in Newport, provided a positive drug wipe for cannabis, and was subsequently arrested and charged with drug driving.

He admitted this offence in the Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (2 September).

He was handed a 12 month driving ban and also ordered to pay a £120 fine, £85 court costs, and a £48 victim surcharge.

Following his conviction, Hampshire Constabulary said:

"We regularly highlight the importance of recognising the dangers of the ‘Fatal Four’ when driving - these are the four poor driving habits that often lead to serious or fatal collisions.

"The Fatal Four are drink/drug driving, driving without a seatbelt, speeding, and using a mobile phone whilst driving.

"Officers will take action against anyone observed to be perpetrating any of these behaviours behind the wheel. If you drive in this manner, you put your own life and the lives of other road users at serious risk. We won’t tolerate it."
