Newport will host marching bands today (Saturday) as part of Isle of Wight Day celebrations.
The Open Air in the Square programme of Newport town centre events run by Market Days CIC is bringing marching bands back to St Thomas Square this weekend to complement their Medieval Market Event.
Medina marching band will set off from Drill Hall Road at 11am to march through the town to St Thomas Square. Vectis Corps of Drums will set off at 9.30pm along the same route.
The Isle of Wight Day celebrations based at Carisbrooke Castle will extend to the town’s historic market square, where Market Days CIC is hosting market stalls, street performance and busking.
The entertainment in the historic market square includes jesters and juggling, with circus acts alongside music and performance from local folk duo Coppersmith. Buskers will be providing a vibrant music scene in the town centre organised by the newly set up Island Busking Collective.
Other activities include a traditional apple pressing demonstration and people are invited to bring their own apples to see how apple juice can be made traditionally.
These events are part of the Newport High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, funded and delivered by a partnership of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, Historic England and Isle of Wight Council.
