Newport Win FA Vase Shoot-Out As East Cowes Vics Draw

Newport edged through the first qualifying round of the FA Vase in dramatic fashion.

Despite having to forego home advantage, because East Cowes Vics were at home, which is Port’s temporary home ground, and Smallbrook Stadium, their other option, being used as one of the venues for the Island’s annual Scooter Rally, it was the Island side who were victorious.

It meant a lengthy trip to Warminster Town for the Wessex League Division One team, and there was little to choose between the two sides in a goalless 90 minutes, so the tie went straight to a penalty shoot-out, which Newport won.

But the game was not without incident, as Newport manager Steve Brougham was shown a second yellow card just before the final whistle, which meant a dismissal, for dissent.

With all to play for in the penalty shoot-out, Josh Younie stepped up to take the first spot kick, which was saved, but Warminster failed to capitalise as their first effort was also kept out by Liam Pitman.  Liam Triggs then gave Newport the advantage, but the hosts responded by hitting home from 12 yards. George Colson added to the Newport goal tally, but again Warminster levelled. However, Newport regained the advantage, this time with Pitman turning goalscorer, and after the mainland side missed again, Connor Kelly wrapped it up with a clinical strike to book their place in the next round.

Vics Pick Up A Point

East Cowes Vics picked up another useful Wessex League, Division One point at Beatrice Avenue when they drew 2-2 against Millbrook, to move into 11th place in the table. Millbrook have made a poor start to he new campaign, but surprised the Island outfit by taking an early lead.

Vics responded to level before the break through Toby Snow, but the visitors again edged in front, before Sam Cant again put Vics back on terms. Hopes of a third goal for Vics were boosted when Millbrook had a man sent off, and the Islanders looked to have sealed the win, but had an effort disallowed, after the referee deemed the ball had already gone out of play for a throw-in.
