Newport's Post Office Closes Doors On Final Day Of Co-op Trading

Newport's Post Office has closed its doors as the town's Co-Op store prepares to permanently close this evening (Saturday).

As Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, plans for its closure were announced at the tail end of last year - with job losses expected.

Also closing for the last time today is the instore Post Office, which relocated to the store some years ago after the Newport High Street branch closed, and was subsequently turned into a restaurant.

Many residents who use Post Office facilities in the centre of Newport will now face travelling to Pan or Carisbrooke to send letters and collect pensions.

A Co-op spokesperson, said:

“The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and while this often involves opening new stores, we also have to take difficult decisions and review our existing sites and how they support our goals of creating a compelling offer for communities, viably and conveniently.

“The decision is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment of colleagues, who have been informed and are being fully supported. We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”

The future of the Co-op building is still unknown.
