‘Noisy’ overnight resurfacing works have led to sleepless nights for Binstead residents - and to make matters worse, so-called ‘adverse weather’ has prompted multiple postponements.
Despite the Island basking in sun over the last week or so, Island Roads says ‘unseasonable cold nights’ have led to unplanned cancellations.
The firm says it employs ‘specialised forecasters’ to assess weather conditions in areas where work is being undertaken, and has apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents.
Works to resurface both Cemetery Road and Chapel Road in Binstead have been ongoing since last week.
However, residents were left confused when workers did not show up as planned on both both Friday (23) and Monday (26).
Taking to Twitter, Island Roads has repeatedly blamed ‘adverse weather’.
Cemetery Road, Binstead – Tonight’s resurfacing works have been cancelled due to the adverse weather forecast. We apologise for the inconvenience caused @iwight

So what exactly does it mean?
A spokesperson for the company said:
”There are several elements to resurfacing schemes and some of these elements – particularly those involving hot materials - are particularly susceptible to weather conditions. Low air and ground temperatures as well as wind-speed are all taken into account when delivering work.
“Therefore, due to unseasonably cold nights experienced on the Island recently, Island Roads have had to postpone some resurfacing schemes because the night-time conditions fail to achieve specified requirements for laying hot materials. Where possible works involving excavation and/or cold materials have been progressed.
“Island Roads employ specialist forecasters who provide a forecast specific to the area where work is planned and the decision on whether to work is based on that bespoke forecast.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience to residents and road users who may be impacted by these postponements.“
Work on both roads is due to continue this evening (Thursday).
