The Isle of Wight Council has sought to clarify why it's ticketed three of its own vehicles, for parking in bays outside its Newport home.
Photos show vans labelled with 'council/NHS' logos parked at the rear of County Hall yesterday (Wednesday).
All three were pictured with parking tickets, issued by council-employed traffic wardens.
It led to confusion on social media with some asking why the local authority was essentially ticketing itself.
A spokesperson for the council has since clarified it will, in fact, be the drivers of the vans who will (literally) have to pay the price.
The council said they were issued because they parked in the wrong bays.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“The vehicles have been issued Penalty Charge Notices for parking in the Visitors Bays section of County Hall Car Park. Motorists using these bays are obliged to pre-book the bay.
"Our records show that the drivers of these vehicles had not pre-booked the bay, and therefore reduces capacity for members of the public who require to visit County Hall.
“The drivers of these vehicles would have been made aware not to park in the marked bays and at that time there were plenty of other spaces they could have parked in which are not available to visitors.”
