Ventnor Coastguard Rescue team attended a staggering 173 incidents in 2020, according to statistics revealed today (Sunday).
Despite the coronavirus lockdown, it was an extremely busy season for Coastguard teams on the Isle of Wight as Islanders took advantage of the summer's relaxation of rules to visit the coast.
Calls included ordnance discovery, medical incidents along the coastline, and casualty evacuations.
Notable incidents attended, and reported by Isle of Wight Radio, include the death of a woman on the beach at Yaverland, Jet Ski tourists stuck in the mud in Ryde harbour, and a male who was airlifted from the cliff near Compton.
In total, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue team attended 173 incidents, an increase of over 40 from 2019.
The busiest month recorded was in July, with a total of 31 calls, and the most likely day to be called into action was a Saturday.
