Person On Roof Of St Mary's Hospital Prompts Emergency Response

A person on the roof of St Mary's Hospital last night (Friday) prompted an emergency response.

Firefighters were called to the site in Newport to assist police at 6.43pm.

According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service, the person was left with police after the incident.

Teams stood down at 9.16pm.

A helicopter was also understood to be in the area.

A man has been arrested after the incident for 'multiple offences'.

A number of vehicles were damaged during the incident and 'riot sheilds' were used due to the person 'throwing items.'

In a statement on Facebook, Hampshire Constabulary said:

'Officers have been dealing with a male on the roof of a building in the hospital complex. Several vehicles have been damage and officers deployed with ‘riot shields’ due to items being thrown at property and people.

'The incident was drawn to a safe conclusion and a male has been arrested for multiple offences. Due to this being a live investigation no other details can be provided. It is important not jump to conclusions without all the facts.'

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said:

'We experienced an incident involving an individual on our Sevenacres Building at St. Mary's. The police and emergency services were in attendance to provide support, therefore we are unable to share any further information until this has been investigated.'

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:

'We were called at 6.17pm yesterday (Friday 2 April) to a report of a man on the roof of St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.

'The man reportedly threw tiles from the roof, towards people and vehicles in the car park.

'Officers and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) attended.

'A number of vehicles belonging to NHS staff and two police vehicles were damaged. No-one was injured.

'A 41-year old man, from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, affray and threatening to damage property. He remains in custody at this time.'
