Pilot Escapes Injury After 'Emergency Landing' At Sandown Airport

A pilot has escaped injury after a plane was forced into an 'emergency landing' at an airport on the Isle of Wight.

A twin engine craft suffered a technical fault and could not lower its landing gear.

The pilot radioed in to Sandown Airport at around 1pm, reporting that the plane's retractable undercarriage (landing gear) had not come down.

Daniel Subhani, owner of Sandown Airport, said the plane was told to stay in the air and "burn off some fuel" until fire crews had arrived.

Two appliances from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called. The plane was able to land on rough ground to the side of the runway.

A spokesperson for the fire service said:

"Two fire engines attended Isle of Wight Airport at just after 13:00 today in preparation for an emergency landing.

"The stop message was received at 13:34 after the plane was successfully landed. No action was taken by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service."

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, Mr Subhani said the airport has measures in place to prepare for incidents like this.
