Further works to ‘enhance’ a luxury, seafront Isle of Wight hotel have been approved.
A2K Leisure LLP’s application to install a new entrance to the restaurant and bar in Freshwater Bay’s Albion Hotel, create an external kitchen storage space and remove a bin store has been given the green light by County Hall planners.
The plans follow an extensive 2023/24 renovation of the hotel which opened in the summer of last year.
A statement from the applicant’s agent, Modh Design Ltd, said the project was about the ‘prominent’ hotel’s ‘continued use, enhancement and enjoyment’.
Its ‘positive effects’ would improve Freshwater Bay as a whole, plans said, with ‘tourism, economic growth and employment opportunities’.
Setting out the plans, the Island-based architecture firm said:
“Utilising an area to the west of the service area of the hotel, a covered external walkway leading to an external kitchen store would provide additional kitchen storage space required.
“The covered walkway allows for members of staff to easily access the kitchen store during service hours.
“The infill extensions for the restaurant and bar utilise existing roof overhangs with glazed doors and windows to provide entrance lobbies to the public areas of the hotel.
“These lobbies will provide a wind shield for the internal dining spaces and will improve the presence of the entrances on the elevations without having an impact on the overall footprint of the building.”
A council report explaining the decision said the proposed development would ‘enhance’ the building’s appearance, improve its facilities and support the site’s tourism offer in line with Island and Freshwater planning policy.
The proposal would also ‘preserve and enhance’ the Freshwater Conservation Area’s character which the hotel sits within.
Three conditions were attached to the approval: development is started within three years from the date of permission, submitted plans are adhered to and no external lighting is installed at the site until the council approves relevant details.
Freshwater Parish Council signalled its support for the application earlier this month.
