Raw Sewage Leak Closes Road In Sandown

A 'third-party contractor' cutting through a sewage pipe in Sandown is believed to have caused a sewage leak.

Southern Water says it has had to ask for Nunwell Street to be shut.

It's to allow for repairs works to be carried out.

As reported by Isle of Wight Radio yesterday (Wednesday), raw sewage was said to be 'pouring out' of the pavement.

Pictures showed human excrement on the pavement and road, and residents reported an 'horrendous' smell.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said:

“A third party contractor carrying out street works in the area is believed to have cut our sewer in Nunwell Street. Our teams were on site the same evening and worked through the night.

"We have had to ask the road be closed as we continue with repairs to protect the environment and provide wastewater service to our customers.”
