Residents Evacuated Following Major Landslip At Bonchurch

An estimated 20 residents in the Bonchurch area have been evacuated following a major landslip last night (Sunday, December 10) with the main road between Shanklin and Ventnor closed off.

It began at around 9.30pm on Sunday evening in the area known as The Landslip around Leeson Road.

Police closed the road, thus cutting off the route between Shanklin and Ventnor, and began alerting residents.

Properties on the sea side of the road between Bonchurch Shute and Smugglers Haven were being evacuated at around midnight last night.

The Isle of Wight Council has set up temporary accommodation at Daish’s Hotel in Shanklin for evacuees needing shelter.

The landslip is reportedly still moving and could continue to damage homes and gardens in the area - at least 20 homes have already been evacuated.

The National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter was observed hovering over the area last night, presumably surveying the damage.

Currently Southern Vectis Route 3 buses will not be calling at stops between Daish Hotel and Chimney Steps.

More when we have it.
