Two young entrepreneurs from the Isle of Wight look set for a bright future with their exciting sunglasses brand.
Jake Wherry and Ellis Lynas are the brains behind Jake Ellis — a range of shades aimed at those who enjoy the outdoor lifestyle and want a lightweight conduit between the extremes of commonly purchased bulky or tinny frames.
A string of glowing reviews have been backed up in recent months with Jake Ellis named nominees in the Red Funnel Awards for Best Newcomer.
We 'test drove' a pair of the Compton range of glasses to see how they match up to what else is on the market, here's the low down.
The Jake Ellis sunglasses range on display in Newport's Visual Impact
Comfort ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The lightweight frame and easy fit give the sunglasses a featherweight feel on the nose and ears.
There is no imprint left on the face even after lengthy wear and if it wasn't for the dark lenses you could easily forget you're wearing them.
Lenses ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Polarised lenses have a superb gradient and offer extensive protection from bright light.
Colours virtually invisible to the naked eye become vivid through the Compton lenses — faint rainbows become strikingly conspicuous.
The dark lenses offer a hint of contrast and are crisp and clear.
Robustness ⭐⭐⭐
The lightweight frame comes with its pitfalls, with the arms of the popping off with a little force.
That said, they do clip back in unless smashed beyond repair, so unless the user has a penchant for heavier frames (such as Ray Bans' Wayfarer range) these versatile specs are a great option.
Cost ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A price tag of £50 for the Compton range is competitive within the marketspace.
There are also various offers available for multi-item purchases or signing up to the Jake Ellis newsletter.
Overall the sunglasses are good value for money.
Design ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The flexible TR90 frames look neat and are available in a range of colours.
They find the sweet spot between a thin aviator or thick browline design.
Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Isle of Wight can be proud to have its very own sunglasses brand, and the good news is that it looks and feels good.
Cheaper than the usual mid-market brands, Jake Ellis proudly represents the Island like a badge of honour.
