The Ryde Rowing Club had a strong display in their final event of the season after it was nearly called off.
The team travelled to Paignton on Saturday (September 10) for the final event of the 2022 coastal season.
The South Coast Rowing Championship is an annual event where crews from across organisations in the south compete in events.
The best two crews from across the three associations compete in the Championship event, with the remaining crews competing in open events.
The Ryde Rowing Club did not have any crews competing in the championship this year but their open crews put up a strong showing with a first, second and third place finish over multiple races.
The Men's Open Junior Senior Four of Ben Sanderson, Dale Buckett, Joel Smith, Austin Smith and coxed by Niamh Murphy won their final comfortably after taking an early lead.
The two young Ryde Men's Novice Crews were drawn in the same heat forcing the club to borrow a coxswain from Poole.
However both crews — the A crew consisting of Isaac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Harry Jones, Dan Sanderson and cox Niamh Murphy and the B crew of Matthew and Lars Groothius, Yogi Ashworth, Edward Williams and the Poole Cox — raced well to finish first and second in their heat and subsequently in the final where they finished second and third respectively.
The Club's Men's Coastal Junior Coxed Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Callum Hynd and again coxed by Niamh Murphy rowed well to qualify for their final, in which they finished 4th.
The Club also had a Boys J15 Coxed Quad consisting of Issac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Edward Williams, Yogi Ashworth and Niamh Murphy coxing who finished 5th in their heat.
The passing of Her Majesty the Queen on Thursday (September 8) put some doubt over whether the event would go ahead.
However, with guidance of British Rowing and Sport England the organisers decided not to cancel — with those in attendance showing their respect with a minutes silence.
