Ryde's Pat Awarded Freedom Of The Town For Sport Contributions

Ryde Town Council has presented a Ryde resident with the freedom of the town, following her lifelong contribution to sport in the area.

Patricia Maclean (née Hird) has been awarded the Freedom of Ryde in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to sport as both a tennis player and coach, as well as her unwavering dedication to supporting young athletes over several decades.

The award celebrates Pat’s remarkable life of quiet service and achievement, honouring her as one of Ryde’s most cherished residents.

Born on 11 November 1934, Pat Maclean is a distinguished former British tennis player and proud member of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Pat twice reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon singles tournament and was a two-time women's doubles quarter-finalist. Her international career included representing Great Britain in the 1954 Wightman Cup.

Beyond her achievements on the court, Pat has dedicated her life to coaching and inspiring young athletes, fostering a love of sport among the next generation. Her gentle wisdom and infectious passion for tennis continue to be felt at the Mead Lawn Tennis Club and during her regular visits to Wimbledon, where she remains a respected figure.

A true pillar of the community, Pat's humility, warmth, and enduring commitment to nurturing local talent have earned her widespread respect and admiration throughout Ryde and the Island. Whether mentoring budding sportsmen and women or simply offering kind encouragement, she embodies the spirit of generosity and service that defines Ryde.

Pat has quietly rubbed shoulders with tennis icons and celebrities, yet her heart has always remained with the Ryde community. This well-deserved honour acknowledges not only her sporting achievements but also the decades of love, dedication, and inspiration she has brought to the town.

The Mayor of Ryde commented:

"Pat Maclean's name is etched into Ryde’s sporting history. Her contribution to tennis, both nationally and within our community, has been immense. It is a privilege to present this award to someone who has shaped so many lives with kindness and passion."

As she celebrates this milestone in her 90th year, The Freedom of Ryde Award recognises Pat Maclean as one of Ryde's most beloved residents — a true legend whose impact will be remembered for generations.
